Background of the Study
Mob justice, often arising from a perceived failure of formal legal systems, involves collective actions by community members to punish alleged offenders outside of judicial processes. In Owerri West, Imo State, mob justice has become an alarming phenomenon that challenges the rule of law and raises serious human rights concerns. The phenomenon is often fueled by deep-seated mistrust in the police and judicial institutions, with community members resorting to extrajudicial methods to achieve immediate retribution (Iroanya, 2023). Social media has further amplified these acts, allowing for rapid mobilization and sometimes inciting violence without proper investigation. While some argue that mob justice can provide swift community-based resolution in cases where formal systems fail, the inherent lack of due process often results in wrongful punishment, violations of human dignity, and the erosion of legal standards (Okoro, 2024). Recent incidents in Owerri West have drawn public attention to the dangers of mob justice, highlighting the urgent need for interventions that uphold human rights while restoring faith in formal justice systems (Ezechukwu, 2025). This study examines the socio-cultural, legal, and political factors contributing to mob justice and evaluates its implications for human rights protection in the region.
Statement of the Problem
In Owerri West, mob justice poses a significant threat to human rights and the integrity of the legal system. The reliance on extrajudicial measures by community members, driven by dissatisfaction with formal judicial processes, has resulted in numerous human rights violations (Iroanya, 2023). The absence of proper legal oversight often leads to disproportionate punishments and the risk of wrongful convictions. Additionally, mob justice undermines the authority of law enforcement agencies and compromises the development of a fair and impartial justice system. The problem is further compounded by the rapid spread of information through social media, which can incite further violence. This study seeks to identify the underlying causes of mob justice and assess its impact on human rights in Owerri West, aiming to provide recommendations for reform (Okoro, 2024; Ezechukwu, 2025).

By examining the socio-cultural and legal dimensions of extrajudicial punishments, the research provides valuable insights for policymakers and human rights advocates. The study’s findings aim to guide reforms that strengthen formal justice mechanisms and protect individual rights, contributing to a more equitable legal system. The insights will be instrumental in promoting social stability and legal integrity in the community (Iroanya, 2023; Okoro, 2024).
